Dear Sir/Madam.

My name is Gemma Southam. I am an illustrator working up to be a graphic novelist. I have always loved drawing ever since I could pick up a pencil, not a day goes by when I can not resist doing a quick doodle on a piece of paper. I have always loved animals, mainly wolves, which are a recurring theme throughout my work. Films have also been an inspiration to my art style as they give me idea's for characters and story's, such as Vanhelsing, the Underworld series, the Alien series etc. I feel very inspired by gothic styles but also love childrens movies such as Disney films.

My goal in life is to become a well known Illustrator and Graphic novelist so that I can share my creativity with others. Growing up I was greatly inspired by Disney, the characters always looked perfect, My favourite Disney movie is The Lion King 2, mainly for the two characters Kovu and Kiara, the story is also another reason why I love it. Watching Disney movies always put me in a good mood, and they still do today. My goal is to do the same through graphic novels. I want people to relate to my characters and feel the emotions that my characters feel, and feel like they are part of that story.

I have been working on a graphic novel story for over 6 years now, constantly developing it and changing characters appearances. Although this year at University I had the chance to finally bring that comic to life and will hopefully be working more on it throughout my 3rd year.

I studied art during high school and achieved a grade C. I then studied further and did a 2 year course at Blackburn college and achieved the grade: Merit. I am now attending Blackburn University where I feel my skills have improved greatly over the past 2 years. I have learnt a great deal when it comes to creating characters and story's.

I am writing to you as I have took great interest in the Graphic Novels and Art books that you have Published over the years. I felt very inspired when I found the series: Love, the art work blew me away, which is what brought me to your website. I then found other books which also had an amazing art style and I felt that my style is slightly similar to theirs.

I would like to work for the magnetic collection as I feel there is no better company to publish my art work than one that fits my style perfectly. I feel I would be suitable for this job as my art style is unique and marketable and is not aimed at one group of people, but all comic lovers. I feel that my work would very successful with your help.

Thank you for your time and consideration, I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully, Gemma Southam.

Where I want to be.

In the future I plan to be a well known illustrator and graphic novelist. I plan to create a full graphic novel and self publish it. My main inspiration for illustration is Disney, mainly looking at the older movies such as the lion king and the lady and the tramp. These styles have always stood out to me as they look 'old fashioned', and you can see the detail in the line work. The characters always look 'alive', due to their almost human like facial expressions and body language. Disney always makes their characters very lovable which makes you fall in love with the films. I grew up watching Disney movies and I would always watch the Disney channel on TV. I have always wanted to visit Disney Land, it looks magical just like the films, it looks very exciting and fun, like you could never feel down when you're there, which is another reason I love Disney. The movies can make you feel all sorts of different emotions, but in the end they always make you happy and relieved. Image result for the lion kingImage result for the lady and the tramp
My inspiration for wanting to be a graphic novelist is mainly because I love writing story's, new idea's come to my mind all the time and I would love to make them all into my own graphic novels. I am very interested in the layouts and style of the graphic novel genre. I was first interested in Manga, as I grew up watching anime and wanted to read a Manga as my friends would tell me that the Manga's are usually better than the Anime as they have more information in them, and so I bought a Manga and read it, and loved it. I was fascinated by how it looked like the images were actually moving on the page as I read them. I was very interested in the art in the way that the characters were drawn. I then discovered an Artist that shared a similar interest in Disney, Anime and wolves, just like me, I was blown away by her art work, I liked the uniqueness of her characters and I could see the movement in a still drawing. I discovered that she had created her own graphic novel based on wolves, I then rushed to her website and had to buy it. I loved the story and the designs of the characters, backgrounds and even the way the pages were layed out. This is what inspired me to turn my own wolf story into a graphic novel. I had been working on this story for 6 years before I had found this artist but I was never completely sure what it would turn out to be, as I had all of my characters designed, but the story had no pictures as I would write it for hours on end.
