Cover Letter

To: contact@magnetic-press.com

Dear Sir/Madam.

My name is Gemma Southam. I am an illustrator working up to be a graphic novelist. I have always loved drawing ever since I could pick up a pencil, not a day goes by when I can not resist doing a quick doodle on a piece of paper. I have always loved animals, mainly wolves, which are a recurring theme throughout my work. Films have also been an inspiration to my art style as they give me idea's for characters and story's, such as Vanhelsing, the Underworld series, the Alien series etc. I feel very inspired by gothic styles but also love childrens movies such as Disney films.

My goal in life is to become a well known Illustrator and Graphic novelist so that I can share my creativity with others. Growing up I was greatly inspired by Disney, the characters always looked perfect, My favourite Disney movie is The Lion King 2, mainly for the two characters Kovu and Kiara, the story is also another reason why I love it. Watching Disney movies always put me in a good mood, and they still do today. My goal is to do the same through graphic novels. I want people to relate to my characters and feel the emotions that my characters feel, and feel like they are part of that story.

I have been working on a graphic novel story for over 6 years now, constantly developing it and changing characters appearances. Although this year at University I had the chance to finally bring that comic to life and will hopefully be working more on it throughout my 3rd year.

I studied art during high school and achieved a grade C. I then studied further and did a 2 year course at Blackburn college and achieved the grade: Merit. I am now attending Blackburn University where I feel my skills have improved greatly over the past 2 years. I have learnt a great deal when it comes to creating characters and story's.

I am writing to you as I have took great interest in the Graphic Novels and Art books that you have Published over the years. I felt very inspired when I found the series: Love, the art work blew me away, which is what brought me to your website. I then found other books which also had an amazing art style and I felt that my style is slightly similar to theirs.

I would like to work for the magnetic collection as I feel there is no better company to publish my art work than one that fits my style perfectly. I feel I would be suitable for this job as my art style is unique and marketable and is not aimed at one group of people, but all comic lovers. I feel that my work would very successful with your help.

Thank you for your time and consideration, I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully, Gemma Southam.

Where I want to be.

In the future I plan to be a well known illustrator and graphic novelist. I plan to create a full graphic novel and self publish it. My main inspiration for illustration is Disney, mainly looking at the older movies such as the lion king and the lady and the tramp. These styles have always stood out to me as they look 'old fashioned', and you can see the detail in the line work. The characters always look 'alive', due to their almost human like facial expressions and body language. Disney always makes their characters very lovable which makes you fall in love with the films. I grew up watching Disney movies and I would always watch the Disney channel on TV. I have always wanted to visit Disney Land, it looks magical just like the films, it looks very exciting and fun, like you could never feel down when you're there, which is another reason I love Disney. The movies can make you feel all sorts of different emotions, but in the end they always make you happy and relieved. Image result for the lion kingImage result for the lady and the tramp
My inspiration for wanting to be a graphic novelist is mainly because I love writing story's, new idea's come to my mind all the time and I would love to make them all into my own graphic novels. I am very interested in the layouts and style of the graphic novel genre. I was first interested in Manga, as I grew up watching anime and wanted to read a Manga as my friends would tell me that the Manga's are usually better than the Anime as they have more information in them, and so I bought a Manga and read it, and loved it. I was fascinated by how it looked like the images were actually moving on the page as I read them. I was very interested in the art in the way that the characters were drawn. I then discovered an Artist that shared a similar interest in Disney, Anime and wolves, just like me, I was blown away by her art work, I liked the uniqueness of her characters and I could see the movement in a still drawing. I discovered that she had created her own graphic novel based on wolves, I then rushed to her website and had to buy it. I loved the story and the designs of the characters, backgrounds and even the way the pages were layed out. This is what inspired me to turn my own wolf story into a graphic novel. I had been working on this story for 6 years before I had found this artist but I was never completely sure what it would turn out to be, as I had all of my characters designed, but the story had no pictures as I would write it for hours on end. Reflect on

What about yourself have you identified as being your personal U.S.P?
My style is unique as I have had many influences over time, I have been told that my characters look like a mix of Disney characters and Anime/Manga characters, which is what my drawing style was inspired by. It has also been mentioned that there is something marketable about them and they would make fun action figures.

Where do you see yourself working in A. 19th months? I would like to be working in an illustration studio, working on my personal graphic novel: Till Death Do We Part.  B. 5 years? By this time I would have liked to publish my graphic novel and hopefully achieved recognition through it and maybe be hired by a company. C. The rest of your career.I would like to work for myself, being my own illustrator and graphic novelist as I have many story's I would like to bring to life. I would also like to one day make my graphic novel into a film, which I would need to hire an animator for.

What do you need to achieve this? I would need lots of practice with graphic novels, someone to teach me the basics of them, I would need to work hard and stay motivated. I would need an animator that works in a style that I like, I would need to be earning quite a lot of money for this.

What potential clients, companies or agencies can you identify?

What will your portfolio look like? And what form will this take?

Copyright.

What kind of work can be protected? A print, Published work, film, record literary, artwork and musical material.

How is your work protected? Your work is protected by your Copyright, you create your own terms and conditions. Dating your work to prove that it was you that created it. You can also mark your work using watermarks, although sometimes people can remove these, which you can also take them to court for. You can also use the copyright symbol in your work. There is also the poor mans copyright where you mail the work to yourself but don't open the package. The copyright owner of an artistic work has the following exclusive rights:
Reproduction right, or the right to copy the work, distribution right, or the right to issue copies of the work to the public, rental or lending right, or the right to rent or lend the work to the public, the right to communicate the work to the public by broadcasting or electronic transmission.  It is up to the copyright owner whether anyone else can do any of the above with their works.

How long does copyright last for your kind of work? Your copyright expires 70 years after an artist dies.

What can you do if you find someone has copied your work? If someone has used your work in any way you can either contact them and ask them to stop using it or make them pay for the work they have used. Consider mediation. You can also seek legal advice. If you decided to take them to court there can be many solutions to the issue.

How would you lose copyright of your work? You can sell your copyright to someone but this is usually not a good decision to make. Your copyright also expires when you die. The company you work for can also use your copyright if you sign an agreement.

What does the public domain mean and how and how does copyright impact this? 70 years after  the creator of the art piece/film etc. has died their copyright expires and their work can be used in any way, for example Alice in Wonderland has been re-created many times.
